Never pay a fee to apply for a scholarship
Legitimate scholarships do not charge application fees, “processing” fees, or “registration” fees. If a site asks for a payment, a card number, or your passport details before you have even been selected, close the tab. This is the single most common scam aimed at international students.
Apply where you already have an edge
The huge, famous awards get tens of thousands of applications. The ones restricted by country, by field, by gender, or by a specific circumstance get far fewer — and your odds there are dramatically better. Use the filters above and read the eligibility line carefully rather than applying to everything.
Some of the best money isn't called a scholarship
Several universities on this list meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for international students, which in practice is worth far more than most named scholarships. There is no separate form — you request aid when you apply for admission. Miss that box and, at some schools, you cannot add it later.
Start a year earlier than feels sensible
Many programmes on this page require you to already hold an admission offer, or to be nominated by your university or a local organisation. Nominations and internal deadlines often sit months before the public one. Work backwards from the deadline and add a buffer.
“Closed” is useful information
We leave closed and paused programmes on the list on purpose. Almost all of them run annually, so a cycle that closed last month tells you exactly when to prepare for the next one. Set a reminder for two months before it reopens.
